Evolution, a prominent supplier in the global igaming market, has initiated a legal battle against Light & Wonder (L&W) over allegations of intellectual property infringement. The lawsuit, filed in the Nevada District Court last week, accuses L&W of utilizing proprietary information from Evolution’s popular Lightning Roulette game to develop similar games.
The complaint lists Evolution Malta Limited, Evolution Gaming Malta Limited, Evolution Gaming Limited, and SIA Evolution Latvia as plaintiffs. The defendants named in the case are L&W and LNW Gaming. Evolution claims that L&W accessed confidential mathematical files from Lightning Roulette, leading to the creation of what they describe as “copycat” games.
Evolution’s Lightning Roulette has been a strong performer in the U.S. market and all around the world, securing the fifth spot in the most recent Eilers-Fantini report’s top games by GGR charts. The current dispute originated in 2021 when Evolution entered discussions with Scientific Games, now LNW Gaming, to develop a land-based version of Lightning Roulette.
During these discussions, Evolution alleges that it shared sensitive data, including the mathematical framework of Lightning Roulette, under the assumption that it would be used for collaboration purposes. However, the partnership did not materialize, and shortly after, L&W released games titled Roulette X and PowerX, which Evolution claims are replicas of their game.
The lawsuit alleges: “LNW Gaming induced Evolution into providing L&W with Evolution’s trade secrets for Lightning Roulette … under the auspices of entering into a partnership for developing physical Lightning Roulette game tables, but turned around and used those trade secrets to develop its own copycat products knowing that its acts would harm Evolution.”
Evolution is seeking damages for the financial losses incurred due to the alleged IP theft and is requesting an injunction to prevent L&W from engaging in similar activities in the future.
This case marks the second legal challenge L&W has faced in 2024. Earlier this year, Aristocrat Gaming filed a lawsuit against L&W, accusing the company of creating a “cheap knock off” of its Dragon Link title with their game ‘Jewel of the Dragon’.
