The Storm and Broncos launched Round 23 of the NRL Telstra Premiership with a Thursday night blockbuster at AAMI Park.

On a horror night for Michael Maguire's men they lost both halves Adam Reynolds and Ezra Mam to hamstring injuries in the first hallf before Selwyn Cobbo limped off in the closing stages with a suspected hamstring injury as well.

The Storm's 22-2 victory takes them to the top of the ladder on points differential - at least until the Raiders play on Friday night.

The Broncos were held tryless in a game for the first time since Round 15, 2021 when they were beaten 46-0 by the Rabbitohs.

Storm v Broncos at AAMI Park

Storm v Broncos - Round 23, 2025

Storm: Round 23

Broncos: Round 23

Numbers don't lie: The Storm had 55 per cent of possession and had seven more sets with the ball while the line break count was 5-0. The home side had 43 tackle breaks to 27 and had 16 less missed tackles. The 20-point margin takes the Storm's differential to +248, well clear of the Raiders' +152. Canberra can go back to the top of the ladder with a win over the Sea Eagles on Friday.

From the field: Ben Hunt

Full-time: With Ryan Papenhuyzen (222m) and Grant Anderson (198m) topping the 200 mark and Xavier Coates racking up 198 metres and two tries the Storm overpower the undermanned Broncos to chalk up yet another AAMI Park victory. The Storm have now won 17 of their last 18 games against the Broncos.

78 min: Selwyn Cobbo hobbles off the field with a leg injury as Deine Mariner dives for the corner and goes into touch before grounding the ball.

Coates gets a second via a Penalty try

77 min: The Munster-Coates combination strikes again as the five-eighth goes to the air and the aerial specialist Coates brings it down and reaches out to score. The bunker rules a mid-air tackle by Deine Mariner had denied Coates a try and a penalty try is awarded. Nick Meaney kicks the goal from in front. Storm 22-2.

74 min: The Broncos look to have run out of ideas as they fail to get a kick away on the last and Ben Hunt throws a 'Hail Mary' offload that floats forward.

71 min: The Storm threaten again on the left edge but Ryan Papenhuyzen's pass goes astray and rolls into touch.

70 min: Jack Gosiewski is penalised in possession for raising his elbow into Cameron Munster's face as he takes the ball to the line.

66 min: A let-off for the Broncos as Cameron Munster comes up with a dropped ball.

62 min: Harry Grant shoots out of dummy half and sends a long ball to Xavier Coates to touch down in the corner for his 15th try of the season. Nick Meaney misses the conversion. Storm 16-2.

61 min: Cameron Munster bombs to the corner for Xavier Coates to chase and Jack Gosiewksi is penalised for an escort.

55 min: Reece Walsh nudges a grubber into the goal, Xavier Coates cleans up, Ryan Papenhuyzen's short dropout touches Joe Chan before going 10 metres. Penalty Broncos.

50 min: A loose offload by Ryan Papenhuyzen is dived on by Billy Walters and the Broncos get another shot but Jack Gosiewski puts it down on the right edge.

48 min: The Storm threaten the line again but Shawn Blore puts the ball down and the Broncos hang on.

47 min: The Broncos go the short dropout, Payne Haas bats it back and Reece Walsh lets it bounce and Nick Meaney pounces and scores. The bunker rules both Walsh and Meaney had knocked on in the challenge and the try is ruled out.

46 min: A pinpoint kick buy Cameron Munster into the in goal is cleaned up by Deine Mariner who is tackled in goal to force a line dropout.

Mad about Harry: In his 100th game for the Storm, Harry Grant was electric out of dummy half in the opening 40. Grant had 11 runs for 102 metres, one line break and a line break assist. The Storm had 54 per cent of possession and their big guns Grant and Ryan Papenhuyzen (12 runs for 135 metres) had their fingerprints all over the game.

Broncos lose both halves in one play

Half-time: The loss of Adam Reynolds and Ezra Mam is set to have huge ramifications for the Broncos. Both playmakers did their hammy as they tried to run down a rampaging Xavier Coates. The Storm scored their two tries after the Broncos duo left the field and now threaten to blow the game open.

Ryan Papenhuyzen Try

38 min: On the back of a penalty against Payne Haas the Broncos crack after doing plenty of defence when Ryan Papenhuyzen powers through a poor attempted tackle by Jordan Riki. The conversion from Nick Meaney is successful. Storm 12-2.

32 min: The Storm are penalised for a strip and throw in a captain's challenge which they lose.

Tyran Wishart Try

29 min: Cameron Munster goes to the air, the Broncos spill it, Grant Anderson scoops it up and is tackled 10 metres out. The Storm go right and Tyran Wishart pulls through a couple of tackles to reach out and score. Nick Meaney adds the extras. Storm 6-2.

22 min: A double blow for the Broncos with Adam Reynolds and Ezra Mam both succumbing to hamstring injuries suffered as they tried to chase down Coates.

WHAT an effort from Selwyn Cobbo!

21 min: Xavier Coates takes an intercept and beats three Broncos and looks set to score in the corner but Selwyn Cobbo produces a superb cover tackle to take him into touch. Broncos 2-0.

19 min: Heavy defence by Kotoni Staggs and Ben Hunt forces an error from Shawn Blore and the Broncos go into the Red Zone.

17 min: Harry Grant is penalised for a push in the ruck and Adam Reynolds knocks over his 21st consecutive successful kick at goal. Broncos 2-0.

14 min: Payne Haas picks up a loose ball and powers into the back field before finding Gehamat Shibasaki who gets it to Reece Walsh but the fullback throws a forward pass to Selwyn Cobbo and the opportunity is lost.

13 min: Jordan Riki ends up with the ball and puts a bomb which he taps back but Ben Hunt knocks it on.

9 min: Adam Reynolds grubbers, Kotoni Staggs chases and gets there first but just can't control the ball and the Storm come away.

8 min: Cameron Munster goes to the air but the kick is way too long and Reece Walsh claims it easily on the full for a seven-tackle set.

5 min: A sloppy play the ball by Jack Gosiewski puts the Broncos under pressure.

3 min: Grant Anderson finds space on the right and kicks back infield but the Storm come up with a knock on.

2 min: The Storm get the opening penalty after Reece Walsh clatters into Ryan Papenhuyzen as the Melbourne No.1 tried to catch a bomb.

Late Mail

Storm: A late change an hour before kick-off with Joe Chan shifting to the centres and Alec MacDonald added to the bench in his return from a rib injury that has kept him sidelined since Round 18. Jack Howarth dropped out on Wednesday with a groin injury. Trent Loiero is also set to take his place in the team after being rested last week, with Ativalu Lisati shifting to the bench. Harry Grant will play his 100th game for the Storm.
