Ontario, the first Canadian province to regulate a competitive market for online gaming and sports betting, has announced the results of the first year of activity after the market was officially inaugurated on April 4, 2022.

During this first year of operations, the Ontario residents placed wagers worth a staggering 35.6 billion Canadian dollars in total, and that amount does not include promotional wagers. There are over 40 online casino and sportsbook operators that are active in the province, along with several suppliers that have received licenses from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario.

The total gaming revenue for the year amounted to 1.4 billion Canadian dollars, an amount which places Ontario among the top five iGaming jurisdictions in North America. “Those numbers speak for themselves,” said Dave Phillips, Chief Operating Officer of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario.

George Sweny, VicePresident of Regulatory Affairs at Flutter International, added that his company, a global gaming giant, is “proud of Ontario’s success in establishing a regulated and competitive iGaming market over the past year.”

Flutter did invest heavily in this market through two of their most prominent brands, FanDuel and PokerStars. The two brands also have signed a partnership with Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, the huge Canadian sports company that owns franchises in four of the six major professional sports leagues in North America.
